How to weigh your garage door: 1. Raise the door to the full position and secure with C-clamp or locking pliers (vice-grips) in track below bottom roller.
2. Remove the springs from the door. 3. For a one car opening, lower the door onto one bathroom scale in the center of the door and read the weight. For a double door (16 ft. wide or larger) use two bathroom scales. Locate the scales two feet in from each side. Take the weight of both scales and add together for door weight. 4. Measure door height. Standard height is 7ft. 7ft doors require 25" x 42" extension springs. If your door is 8ft. high, refer to 27" x 48" extension springs.
Before you try and replace any part of your garage
door, it will help to know a thing or two about the various parts of that door.
When it comes to springs, there are two types: tension and extension springs.
For the sake of this article, we will cover the extension type of spring. You
must know what kind of spring to purchase for your door before you buy anything
at all. How do you find out what kind of spring you have? Well, take a look at
pictures of each type. You will soon be able to determine what type of spring
your door uses. Now, let’s talk about those extensions.
Extension springs have a closely wound appearance. When
these springs extend, they are able to lift up objects due to torque. Most of
these springs include various hooks and attachments. The type of attachments
that are added to each spring is determined by the spring’s ultimate purpose.
For example, some smaller springs might include small hooks, and these springs
can be used for lifting lighter objects. On the other hand, your garage door
probably includes springs that come with large hooks that are meant for garage
doors exclusively.
If you aren't sure what kind of spring your door
requires, feel free to contact us. You will need to know the make and model of
your door, the weight of the door itself, and the type of spring that you are
currently using. For the most part, you cannot change the type of spring that
your door requires. If you presently use extension springs, then you will have
to purchase the same kind of springs as replacement parts. When it comes to
garage doors, it always pays to buy quality parts. Otherwise, you will simply
have to replace those parts within the near future, which is actually quite
expensive.
Can you install extension springs on your own? This
type of spring can be installed without the help of a professional. Simply
follow the instructions listed on the package, make sure you know the
measurements of your door, and choose the right kind of spring. Most home
projects can be done on your own with just a big of research – this happens to
be one of them. Why pay for a contractor to replace your garage door springs?
Simply following the steps listed above, choose the right spring, and save
yourself some time and money.
