Garage door hinges are embossed with a number representing the size of the hinge. Old, rusted hinges are sometimes hard to decipher due to age and wear. If you place your hinge on a level ground, and measure the distance from the ground to the center of the top hole, that measurement can be referenced using the chart below.

Most hinges in circulation today are based on the measurements above and will work with most garage doors.
(Note: The heights given in the chart above apply to all of the hinge gauges.)
We only recommend using hinges such as 16 gauge minimum. Cheaper contractor grade doors use 18 gauge hinges to save expense and overall weight of garage door. For commercial doors we recommend using 14 or 11 gauge hinges.
