One-Piece Holmes Garage Door Springs

STEP 1


 



OVERHEAD CLEARANCE

Measure overhead clearance in your garage by measuring the distance from bottom of header to top of ceiling at various points as shown at distance "D". here in STEP 1. This includes pipes, rafters, garage door opener or any other obstructions.






STEP 2


 

Select appropriate headroom hole from
table 1 based on your measurement from step 1.







STEP 3


 

Measure door thickness from face of door to mounting surface of door angle.





STEP 4


 

Measure down from the bottom of the header 20 1/4", plus the thickness of the door, SEE STEP 3. Now mark where measured on center for top hole. Next measure 6 5/8" and mark on center. These marks will be where you drill and mount your hardware master plate. Next measure down 48" and mark on center for your anchor chain. Next drill 1/4" holes where all marks where made. Optional safety braces can be installed from master plate shoulder bolt hole, to jamb. SEE STEP 10. Now nail rubber bumpers to bottom of header approximately 10" from each jamb. (optional).





STEP 5


 

Next go ahead and mount hardware via the master plate, securely to jambs using the provided 3/8" lag screws and oval washers. Hardware needs to be positioned as shown in the STEP 5 illustration. Place two 3/8" thick shims on the floor across door opening about 12" from the jambs. Now bring the door into the opening by fitting the top of the door face behind header inside the garage. The bottom of the door should also be resting on the shims and the top of the door should be resting on the header. Make sure the door is in it's most upright verticle position. It will be necessary to loosen the 3/8" carraige bolts and nuts for the cantilever arms. Door gaps are normally 3/8" to 5/8" on each side. Gaps need to be as even and strait as possible. Getting gaps even may be require raising or lowering the door by adding and or removing bottom shims on either side. With door in the proper position, Use the provided 5/16" X 2" lags to secure hardware door angle to the door side rails. Hardware door angle needs to be strait up and down with an equal distance from outter edges of the door. Now tighten your cantilever arm bolts. Place door stops between door and jamb and mark extension of door past jamb edge. When door is in the raised position, fasten door stops with the provided 1 3/4" long drive nails to the jamb face about 6" above the floor.

NOTE: STEP 11






STEP 6


 

After step 5 it's time to securely attach the anchor chain to jambs using the provided 3/8" lag screws and oval washers. Anchor chain needs to be positioned as shown in the STEP 6 illustration.





STEP 7


 

IMPORTANT Prop the door into the full open position. Make sure prop is secure.





STEP 8a


 

For single springs, install "C" hook thru the chain. Install the other "C" hook over the lower bushing on the kicker plate as shown in the illustration. Attached spring to lower hook. Apply the "L" plate and keeper ring according to the illustration. Then stretch the spring to connect to the upper "C" hook. Add "L" plate and keeper ring. As a rule 1" of prestretch is required for proper operation, with no more than 2" of prestretch. Repeat the procedure on opposite jamb.

Tip: You can also mock up for 1" of prestretch before assembling plates and keeper rings.






STEP 8b


 

For double springs, install "W" hook thru the chain. Install the other "W" hook over the lower bushing on the kicker plate as shown in the illustration. Attached springs to lower hook. Apply the plate and keeper ring according to the illustration. Then stretch the spring to connect to the upper "W" hook. Add plate and keeper ring. As a rule 1" of prestretch is required for proper operation. Repeat the procedure on opposite jamb.

Tip: You can also mock up for 1" of prestretch before assembling plates and keeper rings.






STEP 9


 

Step 9 will usually apply to garage doors that are not equipped with garage door openers. Todays Liftmaster garage openers make a far better lock than the lock itself. As a matter of fact Liftmaster openers utilized posilock electronics. This means that the opener will automatically push the door closed in the event of an attempted intrusion. Another tip is that the pull rope shown in the illustration may swing in front of the openers safety sensors, causing the door to reopen. It is also recommended not to install a handle on garage doors being lifted with a garage door opener.





STEP 10


 



BALANCE ADJUSTMENT (IF NECESSARY)
A.) If door is hard to pull down, use extra shoulder bolt from master plate and insert in first empty hole above the bolt that is already in kicker plate.
B.) If door is comes down to easily, use extra shoulder bolt from master plate and insert in first empty hole below the bolt that is already in kicker plate.
C.) Put nut on newly inserted bolt.
D.) Remove nut from original bolt.
E.) Remove original bolt.
F.) Repeat on opposite jamb.
F.) Repeat the complete procedure as necessary.

NOTE: If it is difficult to insert bolt into new adjustment hole:
1.) Insert bolt as far as possible.
2.) Align kicker holes with holes on the master arm.
3.) Apply nut.
4.) Pull bolt through by tightening the nut with a 9/16" wrench.

CAUTION: ALWAYS MAKE ADJUSTMENT WHEN DOOR IS OPEN. MAKE SURE PROP IS SECURE. ( AS IN STEP 7).






STEP 11


 

If adjustments were successful in STEP 10, door should work easily for 3/4 travel. To make the door work easily for 1/4 travel, adjust kicker assembly as shown in the circled diagram.

NOTE: STEP 5 was put in place in an attempt to avoid this last part of STEP 11.

If door rubs on one of the jamb sides, it will be necessary to adjust one of the door angle plates. This can be obtained by shifting the door angle plate, opposite of the rubbing side, away from the jamb. The amount of required shift, depends on how bad the door is rubbing the jambs.

The safest way to make this adjustment is to securely prop door up, remove springs and bring door back into closed position. It may only be required to remove the springs on the side where the door angle plate will be adjusted.

Once door is operating properly, check all bolts, lags and fasteners to make sure they are secure.
