Remove Your Torsion Springs
Warning: Torsion springs can cause serious injury or death if not handled
and installed
properly. These instructions, winding rods, torsion drums,
and cables are for the purpose
of replacing parts on residential type garage
doors that are no more than 18 ft wide and 8 ft
tall, with inside lift and
springs mounted to the front header of the garage.
UNWINDING SPRINGS:
Close door, disconnect the garage door opener and
install a "C" clamp or locking pliers on both sides of the track against the
top side of a roller to keep door from opening.
Springs must be unwound
to relieve all stored tension before bottom rollers or bottom brackets can
be replaced.
Do not work directly in front of spring winding cone of spring.
Place one of the winding rods in one of the four holes in the winding cone.

.
WARNING: MAKE SURE RODS ARE ALWAYS FULLY
ENGAGE HOLES
IN WINDING CONE.
Place second rod into the hole below, lift up and remove the first rod, continue
lifting the second rod. Repeat for the same number of turns noted when they were
unwound (about 29 quarter turns). While holding spring tension on rod (tension
can be held on the spring by putting a rod in the bottom hole of the spring cone
and relaxing other rod so the lower rod contacts the door and holds the pressure
of the spring against the top of the the door), tighten the setscrews in the spring
cone and remove the rods. Tension will be on the cables. Remove the locking
pliers
(#9)
from the shaft. If there is a second spring, repeat the process to wind
the second spring. After everything is completed and all bolts and screws tightened,
remove the "C" clamps holding the door closed and lift by hand to make sure door
is operating smoothly. Reconnect the garage door opener.
