Identify the correct SPRING KING model for your door below.
Door Height Spring Wire Size SPRING KING Model # Recommended Turns 7 .218 or less SKA #4 White 7.8 7 .225 - .234 SKA # 1 Yellow 7.8 7 .243 - .283 SKA #2 Green 7.8 7 .295 SKA #3 Blue 7.8 8 .200 or less SKA #4 White 8.8 8 .207 - .225 SKA #1 Yellow 8.8 8 .234 - .250 SKA #2 Green 8.8 8 .262 - .295 SKA #3 Blue 8.8
NOTE: Securely lock or vise the door in the closed position before beginning installation of the SPRING KING Spring Winding Unit.
STEP #1__________________ Fasten the Spring King Left Hand Bearing Plate (I) to the Left Side Horizontal Angle (J) using 3/8 x Ύ carriage bolts and 3/8 red nuts. Fasten the Spring King Right Hand Bearing Plate (S) to the Right Side Horizontal Angle (J) using 3/8 x Ύ carriage bolts and red nuts.
STEP #2__________________ Slide the Left-Hand Torsion Spring (A) on the Torsion Tube (B) with the Black Winding Cone (C) toward the center of the tube and the Anchor Cone (D) toward the left side of the tube. Slide the Right-Hand Torsion Spring (M) on the Torsion Tube (B) with the Red Winding Cone (N) toward the center of the tube and the Anchor Cone (O) toward the right side of the tube. Slide the Left-Hand Spring King Spring Winding Unit (F) and the Red Left-Hand Drum (G) on to the Torsion Tube (B) next to the Left Anchor Cone (D). Slide the Right-Hand Spring King Spring Winding Unit (Q) and the Black Right-Hand Drum (H) on to the Torsion Tube (B) next to the Right Anchor Cone (O).
WARNING: Make sure the Left Hand Spring King is on the left side and the Right Hand Spring King is on the right side.
NOTE: The Right Hand Anchor Mounting Nut (R) is stamped with an R for right hand. The Left Hand Anchor Mounting Nut (L) is marked with an L.
STEP #3__________________ Lift the complete Torsion Tube Assembly over the Horizontal Angles (J). Slide the Torsion Tube (B) into the End Bearings, one at a time, making sure that the Drums (G & H) are between the Flanges of the Bearing Plates (I & S).
STEP #4__________________ Level the Torsion Tube (B) and attach the Center Tube Support (U) to a stud or suitable support close to the center of the tube. Finish anchoring the Spring King Bearing Plates (I & S) with 5/16 x 1 ½ lag screws.
STEP #5__________________ Slide the studs of each Spring King Winding Unit (F & Q) through the holes in the End Bearing Plates (I & S) and fasten with Ό red nuts.
STEP #6__________________ Center the Torsion Tube (B) in the Spring King End Bearing Plates (I & S) with an equal amount of the tube sticking out each end. Tighten the set screws on the Red Left Hand Drum (G) enough so that they have slightly dimpled the Torsion Tube (B). Bring the cable up to the Drum (G). Put the end of the cable into the notch in the Drum (G), and turn the Drum (G) until the cable is close to the wall and over the top of the Drum (G). Hold the Drum tight to the Bearing and place a vice grip pliers above the tube (B) to take the slack out of the cable. Go to the right hand side and put the end of the cable in the notch of the right hand Black Drum (G) and turn the drum by hand until the cable is tight. Then, tighten your set screws to hold your drum in place.
STEP #7__________________ Connect the Spring Anchor Cones (D & O) to the Spring King Anchor Mounting Nuts (L & R) using 3/8 x 1 hex head bolts and 3/8 red nuts. Tighten the setscrews on the winding cones (C & N) enough so that they slightly dimple the Torsion Tube (B). Draw a line with chalk the entire length of each spring (A & M). Remove both Spring King Plastic Spacers (K).
STEP #8__________________ Using a drill with a 7/16 socket, wind the Spring King Spring Winding Units (F & Q) up clockwise.
NOTE: Both units wind up clockwise see arrow on units. Approximately the first 30 seconds of winding is stretching the spring. The remainder of the winding applies the turns to the Torsion Spring. Every turn applied to the spring will add one chalk line on to the spring. EXAMPLE: 1 line = 0 Turns (start), 2 lines = 1 Turn, 3 lines = 2 Turns, 4 lines = 3 Turns, etc. Continue winding until you have the correct number of turns on the spring.
WARNING: Keep hand away from the torsion spring while winding.
STEP #9__________________ Remove the vice grip and continue with the door manufacturers installation instructions. NOTE: When door installation is complete, spring tension can be easily adjusted by winding the springs up by clockwise winding of each Spring King Unit an equal amount OR unwinding the springs by counter-clockwise winding of each Spring King Unit an equal amount.
WARNING: Garage door springs are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury or death. To avoid injury, do not remove any screws or fasteners in the spring assembly or wood board to which they are attached while the spring is under tension.
